Summit Helps Protect Critical Transportation Infrastructures

Summit plays a major role in protecting the New York metropolitan area’s most critical transportation infrastructure. Maintaining the safety of railroads, bridges and airports is vital to ensuring the continued vitality of the region’s economy and the comfort and free movement of people. Summit is proud of its longstanding partnerships with the public agencies that operate many of the metropolitan area’s most important transportation systems.

Railroads, Buses, Bridges and Tunnels

Commuters moving between New York City and its surrounding suburbs are protected by Summit security officers every day. Summit delivers extensive security services to the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) and Metro North Railroad, both operated by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). This includes access control, emergency response, security patrols and fire safety services at critical locations for the LIRR and Metro North.

Metro-North connects New York City with suburban communities in Westchester, Putnam, Orange, Rockland and Dutchess counties, as well as Connecticut. The LIRR extends from Manhattan through Queens, Nassau and Suffolk counties. Together, Metro-North and the LIRR represent North America’s two busiest commuter rail lines, handling more than 160 million rail passengers per year and 600,000 riders a day, combined.

In addition to railways operated by the MTA, Summit personnel help secure the Port Authority Trans-Hudson Corporation (PATH) rail system, which is run by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. PATH trains connect New York City with destinations in northern New Jersey, including Newark, Hoboken and Jersey City. Summit also provides security services to MTA Bus, which operates throughout Queens and parts of the Bronx and Brooklyn, providing express service to Manhattan.

If you have crossed a major bridge in the New York City area, you have likely traversed a span protected by Summit. Our security officers secure the iconic George Washington Bridge and Staten Island bridges for the Port Authority. Additionally, Summit’s trained and licensed armed guards protect critical MTA Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority (TBTA) facilities/infrastructure, including the agency’s Randall’s Island Facilities, Ward’s Island Facilities, Joint Revenue Operations Center, and Randall’s Island Alternate Processing Center. Summit also secures the Port Authority’s Marine Terminals in New Jersey, which see the third highest container shipment volume of any port facility in the United States.

Summit has over 20 years of aviation security services experience at JFK International Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport and Long Island MacArthur Airport.

At JFK, Summit has provided security to the airport’s major terminals since 1995. Summit conducted pre-screening for airline passengers—screening more than 20 million people—at several JFK Terminals prior to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) assuming that function in 2003.

Summit maintains its Aviation Office at JFK Airport. The office is the nerve center for our team of highly-experienced and knowledgeable aviation management experts, who direct Summit’s ongoing services to about 40 domestic and international airlines, cargo facilities, and service providers throughout the airport. Summit deploys a force of almost 400 security personnel at JFK.

At Long Island MacArthur Airport, Summit personnel supervise and direct vehicle and foot traffic around airport facilities, while providing access control to sensitive areas of the airport.
